About Night Be Light

Baking has brought me joy for as long as I can remember. At 7 years old my mom allowed me freedom to experiment in the kitchen and one day I decided to try a recipe that involved boiling to “hard ball” temp—something you would usually use a candy thermometer to achieve. After two failed attempts the third try worked and the recipe was a success. From then on, experimenting in the kitchen became one of my favorite pastimes.

As a teenager I created baked goods for our local farmers market alongside my mom. We were known as “Farmgirl Fresh” and the joy of offering a meaningful contribution to our community left a lasting impact on me.

Life began to shift as I decided to attend Technical College as a senior in high school. I was interested in business but at the time they didn’t offer anything related to entrepreneurship. I shocked my friends and customers alike when I side stepped culinary arts and instead chose graphic design as my major. I wanted to have something to fall back on while building a business and I wanted to build new skill sets that I could use down the road. I wound up staying to teach in the same program for several years, became a foster parent for a year and fell in love and got married to my now husband of 5 years.

In recent years my family experienced a lot of losses and various challenges that led to me struggling with mental health and depression. Though I had a new job that I loved and one that helped me gain experience with food safety and management, I didn’t have much time for the people in my life—some who had unique needs. I ended up stepping away from that job just as I was beginning my career with a determination to start something new. I had many different ideas but as I started to get my priorities back in check (faith, family, my own health, etc.) I had a strong desire to return to my roots—to the thing that brought me so much joy as a child. That thing has always been baking.

And so Night Be Light was born! The name comes from Psalm 139:11 which says: “If I say surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.” Night Be Light is a tribute to anyone struggling—the night may feel dark but there is always hope. It’s also my mission to bring light into my community through opportunities to give back and bless others through Night Be Light. Giveaways and fundraisers are one of the things that gives me joy and helps to spread that love throughout our communities!

If you’ve made it this far—thank you!! Your support means the world and helps me to continue to do what I love and share it with others—one smile, one encouraging word, one cookie, at a time.
