Set up variation responses and choice limits
Choose response types, require answers and configure selection or allocation totals.
Edit a product and use Add a Variation. A variation asks for a choice or answer attached to the ordered product; pack sizes and bundle contents have their own controls.
- Choose Response Type, then enter Name and any Instructions. Use the response types offered in the editor; text answers do not have the same settings as a list of options.
- Turn on Response Required when the customer must answer. Add the choices for an option-based response and review their prices, costs and any tracked inventory.
- For response types offering multiple choices, set Min selections and Max selections. These count selected choices, not the number of units bought.
- For an allocation response, decide whether to enable Total = customer's order quantity. With it on, a customer ordering six units must allocate a total of six across the choices. For a separate fixed allocation, turn it off and set Min Total and optional Max Total.
- Save the variation, then Save the product. Check the storefront with representative quantities and choices.
Prices and availability
Option price changes affect the selected configuration. Inventory tracking on an option creates another availability constraint; adding main product stock does not replenish an option automatically. Regular and presale option limits are separate.
A required variation with no available valid answer can prevent a customer from buying the product even while the product's main inventory is positive. Check required choices, selection limits and allocation totals before treating the problem as a missing Sold Out switch.
If a flavor adds ingredients or allergens, record that in the product's label settings too. A variation's name alone does not declare its ingredient composition.
